Prof John R Helliwell is an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the University of Manchester and was awarded a DSc in Physics from the University of York in 1996. He was awarded a DPhil in molecular biophysics, specialising in protein crystallography, from the University of Oxford in 1978. Prof Helliwell has been involved, first at SRS, Daresbury then at ESRF and elsewhere, for over 40 years in the development of instrumentation and methods for synchrotron radiation, supporting the first phase of the ESRF in his role as Chair of the ESRF Macromolecular Crystallography. He was also both Vice-Chair and Chair of the ESRF SAC and Chairman of the Biological Crystallography ILL Neutron Beam Committee. Prof Helliwell has also been constantly engaged in outreach and dissemination of crystallography to the scientific community. In particular his book ‘Macromolecular Crystallography with Synchrotron Radiation’ (1993) has been an indispensable introduction to the field for generations of Structural Biologists.

Associate Professor Joseph Orgel is a British American Scientist based at the Illinois Institute of Technology with past and present appointments in Biology, Physics and Biomedical Engineering and Applied Health Sciences at UIC as visiting faculty. His research interests are concerned with fundamental structural biochemistry problems that have direct links to the understanding and treatment of disease. Using unique techniques developed by Orgel, his group has been able to visualize the molecular organization of connective and neurological tissues to a resolution of less then one billionth of a meter. Joseph Orgel leads investigations of brain pathological diseases such as Alzheimers and Traumatic Brain Injury in collaboration with the US Army and connective tissue conditions including heart disease and arthritis, at the National Institutes of Health Biotechnology Research Resource, BioCAT, as Associate Director. An awardee of the United States National Science Foundation's CAREER award, he has been Biochemistry Section Editor of the Public Library of Science Journal, PloS ONE since 2008 and joined the board of directors of the National Museum of Health and Medicine (Chicago) in December of 2012.

Extracellular matrix biology and collagen structure, protein structure, macromolecular and fiber crystallography The Orgel lab specializes in research into the extra-cellular matrix (ECM) function and organization at the molecular level, amyloid structure and polymerization and membrane proteins. It is a multi-disciplinary team composed of undergraduates, postgraduates, postdocs and the PI using a variety of biochemical, biophysical and computational techniques that include (but are not limited to) X-ray fiber diffraction, single crystal crystallography, micro-diffraction, circular dichroism, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, molecular modeling, bioinformatics peptide synthesis and fibril polymerization and association studies.

Prof. Huifang Xu received his PhD degree from The John’s Hopkins University in field of Mineralogy and Crystallography. He completed postdoctoral studies at Arizona State University in area of electron crystallography. Dr. Xu is a Faculty member in the Department of Geoscience and Materials Science Program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His research interests are studies of incommensurately modulated structures and nano-phase structures using e-beam imaging, X-ray diffraction, and neutron scattering methods. He has published more than 100 papers in fields of mineralogy, crystallography, and inorganic materials. Dr. Xu is an elected fellow of Mineralogical Society of America.

My research focuses on interdisciplinary study of (1) crystal chemistry of clays, rock-forming minerals, and nano-crystals; (2) role of nanopore in controlling geochemical reactions; (3) roles of microbes in controlling mineral shape, structure, and compositions; (4) mineral interface-induced carbonate mineralization: a fundamental process relevant to carbon sequestration; (5) Formation mechanism of banded iron formation (BIF) and dolomite / dolomitization; and (6) functional minerals for environment clean up and renewable energy applications.

Kyoichi Kinoshita obtained his PhD in 1985 from Waseda University. He has been studying crystal growth of bulk semiconductor crystals since he joined the research laboratory of NTT in 1973. He is the advisor of Japan Space Forum (JSF) and a visiting professor of Meiji University. He has published more than 80 papers in reputed journals. He was an editorial board member of Phase Transitions for more than 20 years.

Andrzej Grzechnik has completed his PhD in Chemistry from the Arizona State University in 1996. Since then, he has been working on various topics in the fields of crystallography, materials science, solid state chemistry, condensed matter physics, and applied mineralogy. He has served as a board member of various scientific meetings and review panels. Currently, he is a Chair of the Special Interest Group on Crystallography of Functional Materials (SIG#12) of the European Crystallographic Association.

Jérôme Rouquette obtained his Ph.D in Julien Haines’ group in Materials Science (Condensed Matter) from University in Montpellier (France) in 2004. JR was a postdoctoral fellow in Leonid Dubrovinsky’s group at the Bayerisches Geoinstitut in Bayreuth University (Germany) for two years. JR joined the CNRS as a researcher in 2004 in the field of ferroelectrics/multiferroics and he defended his habilitation in 2012 which was entitled “in-situ structural studies of ferroïc materials as a function of P,T,E,B. JR has published more than 50 research papers in these areas.
